What does a car need to have for you to consider it ‘nice’ or ‘luxurious’?

Luxurious: smells right, looks right inside, feels good on my buttcheeks, and doesn’t transfer a fucking pothole straight into my teeth.

It has to be RWD, 2000 lbs, independent suspension, 0-60 in less than 4 seconds and a Nurburgring time of 7:30:00

Apparently the Lincoln Continental isn’t luxury. Sorry guys.

For me luxury is less about a checklist of items, but rather the feel and character of the car. While my Taurus SHO isnt a luxury car, it has a nice ride, a REALLY quiet cabin (at the top of the list for a luxurious car) and a steady heavy feeling on the road at highway speed.

All I want is quality interior materials (which apparently isn’t a problem anymore) and comfy heated seats. Backup camera would be nice too. Don’t need all this electric nanny bullshit.

Two different things, both depend on intangibles for me.

Nice: Character. Specifically a fun, personable, familiar character. Whether it comes from acceleration, small annoyances, handling, or maybe the lack thereof, ride quality or rugged ride, nice interior, bare interior—it all adds up to something different depending on the person. I could consider something nice that you would probably hate. It’s all how it makes you feel, in my mind, that makes a vehicle “nice”.

Luxurious: If you can get in and just r-e-l-a-x. If you are comfortable and at home in it (for reasons specifically pertaining to the interior). And it has to stay that way when you get moving, ie “I shouldn’t feel that pothole like that, that’s for the peasants .”

“Nice” is a word that I usually use in regards to the condition of the car.

“Luxury”, on the other hand, makes me think about the car in terms of the passenger experience. Comfort features mostly, like a smooth ride, soft seats, good audio, and features like sunroofs, infotainment, etc.

Me: Quality leather, nice steering wheel, extremely quiet cabin, adequate power, great transmission, cohesive and calming interior design motifs.

Automakers: Bluetooth, radar GPS adaptive cruise control with SafeFollow, four TVs, butt cheek massagers, heated steering wheel, a bunch of fake wood, giant wheels, a bunch of numbers and letters on the back that have nothing to do with anything.

luxurious needs many things in my book... but these are on the list:

- soft leather. real leather. none of that almost leather crap.

- heated seats

- non-plasticky steering wheel. wood helps.

Attention to detail. While a Suburban LTZ has more “luxury” features than my LS400 or S600, when I get in either of my cars, particularly the S600, I feel like I’m in a different level of car. Everything just seems more well thought out. No plastic anywhere, no plastic wood, everything is exactly where you’d expect it to be. That is what makes a car luxurious for me.

iPads and Garmins stuck to the dash, and then charge you several grands for it. Don’t forget those.

It transfers more pothole than I like. Buttcheek ergonomics are excellent, but feel could be better.

In its defence though, we are on the East coast so potholes are a bit more savage.

Comfy seats and electric windows are luxurious enough for me (which now that I think about it, is also most cars from the last 10 years or so...)

That’s the Toyota 4Runner for me. Everything feels very nice and properly-installed. The knobs have a very nice feeling to them, they’re smooth, yet they have some sort of resistance to them. The knobs for the AC controls always stop where they’re supposed to, never going in between settings or jumping a setting. Overall the fit and finish in the car is very nice. I guess that’s what you’d expect from Toyota’s master craftsmen.

Honest answer: One big criteria for a luxury car is that it has to sit comfortably at 100+ MPH. I’ve been in cars that felt like they were going to fall apart at anything above 60 MPH. I’ve taken my Accord to 110 easily and it didn’t feel any different than if it were going 65 MPH.

Modern cars: power windows/locks/mirrors/seats, keyless entry, remote start, bluetooth.

Old cars: Working air conditioning.

Solid feeling, good noise and suspension isolation, good interior materials.

The first car that I really found this in was a second gem Acura Legend. Everything just felt nice.

Those were built in Japan as well. Japanese factories are held to a much higher standard than factories elsewhere.

- A car door that shuts with just the right sound, no rattle, no high-pitched clink, just a nice thuddy/latchy noise. Or whatever.

- Perhaps my number one: extremely quiet interior. Yet when the motor builds up its revs, I want it to be a beautiful, yet subtle sound.

-Smooth acceleration. Nice and linear, no lurches from gear shifting and no vibrations from the drive train.

- A high end sound system. I don’t care what gizmo’s it has, but it has to sound phenomenal.

straight fenders, and all of its glass to be “nice”, must ride like sitting on a sofa to be “luxurious”.
